Research Interests

Getahun Abate's research focuses on emerging infectious diseases and mycobacterial diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). He has been involved in the development of simple and reliable assays for rapid detection of multidrug-resistant TB. Jos lab has been active in developing novel anti-TB drugs and repurposing other clinically used drugs to enhance the activity of standard TB drugs. He is testing new vaccines and immunotherapies against pulmonary NTM. His lab has developed a new microneutralization assay to measure neutralizing antibody titers against mpox, and he has qualified assays to measure mpox and vaccinia T cell immunity.
