Summer Scholars Program
The Summer Scholars Program at Saint Louis University School of Medicine offers high school students an immersive, hands-on introduction to the world of healthcare. Founded in 2010 by the Office of Ignatian Mission in Medicine, the competitive program turns interest into real-world experience.
About the Program
The four-week in-person Summer Scholars Program is open to St. Louis-area students entering grades 10 through 12 who are interested in medicine or healthcare. The program inspires students of all backgrounds and experiences to pursue health-related careers.
Coordinated by first-year medical students, the program primarily takes place at the SLU SOM Learning Resource Center.
Experiences
- Connect with specialists in surgery, pediatrics, nursing and more
- Observe a live cadaver demonstration
- Tour the SLU SOM campus and the St. Louis area
- Conduct a research project
- Engage in a community service project
- Prepare for the ACT
- Earn a "Stop the Bleed" certification

- Date: Monday through Friday, June 1-26
- Time: 8 a.m. to noon
- Cost: $500 (need-based aid available)

Eligibility
- Minimum 2.5 GPA
- Demonstrated interest in a health-related career
- Commitment to attend all four weeks of the program
- Availability to attend a required orientation with a parent/guardian
Application Process
- Complete and submit the online application.
- Submit a 300 to 400-word, double-spaced essay explaining your personal interest in medicine.
- Provide one letter of recommendation from a school counselor, science teacher or math teacher.
Applicants for every cycle must apply by the deadline and will be notified of their program status in early April. Online payments are required after notification of acceptance.
